50 States
To visually unify a weekly, year-long series of articles about life in each of America’s 50 states, my illustrations featured official symbols of the states: the flowers, animals, mottos and so on. These articles appeared on the front of the Culture section of the Forward each week.
Dog Whistling
My editor, Adam Langer, requested that I hide a name in the drawings, an homage to Al Hirshfeld, famous for hiding the name of his daughter ‘Nina’ in his caricatures of entertainment personalities.
I lacked a daughter, but had recently become friends with a dog named Daisy. The numbers appearing next to my initials in the drawings refer to how many times the name ‘Daisy’ can be found in the drawing.
In the very last drawing of the yearlong series, Daisy made a cameo appearance, next to some daisies and her name.
